“The way to get started is to quit talking a begin doing.” – Walt Disney

I wish these blog updates were more interesting like they were in Burundi! Last week was fairly uneventful and pretty routine. Having planning time back has been very nice! Getting to do some work during the day means I don’t need to stay too late after school; which is helpful since it gets dark so early.

There has been a lot of snow, but the snow has been on the ground for quite a few weeks now so it isn’t anything new. I find walking in snow rather difficult. I guess that’s what happens what you don’t have to for over a year! It’s also been pretty cold lately – minus 20s.

School has been going well. I’ve been noticing some progress in the students in terms of writing. Kids are getting a little more confident and they are starting to sound out words much better! Now we just need to make some progress with reading.

I’ve been learning some Oji-Cree along with the students. Since I usually stay in the classroom to do work while the students have Native Language I try to listen in on what they are learning. Right now they are learning body parts and animals. I don’t know how to properly spell them so I’ve just been writing them down phonetically.

This past weekend was pretty uneventful. I’m still sick so I’ve just been resting as much as possible. The power was out for quite a bit during the day on Saturday and Sunday. So I spent all of Saturday watching movies and Sunday just cleaning around the house. In the afternoon on Sunday I went to the school to work on lesson planning and to start progress reports. I know provincial schools sent out progress reports a few weeks ago, but ours aren’t due until Wednesday. It’s the first time that I’ve had to write progress reports so it took a while to get going. Usually teachers would use the same general comments for each students, however our community is so small that we need to write individualized comments for each student. It takes a long time, but in the end I think it’s good because you get to tell the parents the important information for their child.

Today was a good day at school. I still had energy left when it was over; which is great considering I’m still sick. I also got almost all of my progress reports done!

Well that’s my update for this week. I will leave you with a picture of the lovely art work my class did on Wednesday!

“Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” – Walt Disney

Time for another update. There really isn't a whole lot to talk about this time around. The week went pretty well at school. I'm very happy with the progress that my class has been making. They have been much better with following the rules. I've been sick for awhile now. I started to feel a bit better near the end of the week, but over the weekend I got sick again.

Two of the teachers went on a spur of the moment trip to Thunder Bay over the weekend and they bought some new shoes for me. I think they are the first things I've bought in over a year for just me without a specific need for them. I'm very excited to wear them. I also got a hamburger!

This morning we got a new Native Language teacher. Having the 45 minute break after lunch again was so nice! I've missed that break. Having to teach all day was so exhausting.

We used some ipads this week in class. Our school has 6 so we have to share them. The kids loved using them and they worked with them so well. Everyone took good care of them and they also shared really well. It was probably the first time all year where I didn't hear any arguing and everyone was engaged. Kids who say they 'can't write' or 'can't add' were magically spelling words and doing adding and subtracting...it's a miracle!

There has been a lot of snow and it's getting really cold; like -20s. I feel like a small child learning to walk for the first time. After over a year of not having to walk in the snow I'm now a little uneasy on my feet!

There isn't much else to update on. Like I said it's been a very uneventful week!

“Hey is for horses and excuse me is for humans, right Miss Jordan?”

Post time again! Let me start with the title of this post. I've been working a lot with the students on saying "excuse me" instead  of"hey" or poking people to get their attention. So when I said "hey is for horses" to one of the students who said "hey" another student responded with "hey is for horses and excuse me is for humans". I had to try so hard not to laugh at this! It was pretty cute!

This week at school has been pretty good. The kids were getting a little off track with their behaviour the week before, but this past week was much better! We started doing Patterning and I’m so pleased with how it’s been going! We have been using a variety of manipulatives to make different patterns. They really enjoy it and they also aren't ‘playing’ with the stuff as much as I thought they would. Here are some pictures of the patterns they were making on the second day

I started getting a bit sick on Tuesday so the week was a little rough in terms of how I was feeling. So I was really happy with how well they acted. I’m started to feel better now, but I still have a cough.

On Tuesday I came home at lunch to find a mouse sitting in my front foyer area. He didn’t even run away when I came in. I even stepped over him to go get a bowl to put over him without him running away. I put the bowl on him and my neighbour helped me throw it outside. The minute it was thrown out the dogs that were out there eat it up. I guess that’s a bonus to the dogs always hanging around our houses.

I actually don’t mind the dogs that much; they are pretty friendly. There is a really adorable puppy that hangs around at times that I want to keep so badly! She has beautiful blue eyes, but I’m afraid that if I take her in I might be a bit allergic to her.

There was a bit of an incident that happened on Friday night. Some students threw rocks at our windows and then wrote on our deck and put hand prints on our windows with paint. Definitely not impressed by this, but there isn’t much to be done about it. Luckily I don’t own the house so I don’t need to worry about cleaning it up. We know who did it so we’ll see what happens.

The weekend was once again uneventful. However, we found out on Friday that Monday was going to be a holiday. I pretty much just spent Saturday and Sunday relaxing and watching TV.

Today we haven’t had any water for most of the day. It went out at noonand will be out for about 5 hours. Then we heard that the power will be going out tonight also for a bit. The power isn’t supposed to be off for long, but anything can happen!

I’m glad that we had a holiday today. I was getting pretty tired so an extra day of rest was definitely needed. We no longer have planning time during the day so it’s exhausting. The Native Language teacher had to quite which means we teach all day. All the other teachers have worked out a schedule for giving them planning time, but I’m not included in that. I need to figure something out because I need that little break during the day!

Well, that’s about it for an update right now.
