“The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.” ― Kalu Ndukwe Kalu

Well it’s that time of the week again. I find a little funny (well mostly frustrating) that after my last post saying that my internet was finally fixed, it stopped working the second I posted that post! So once again it was another week without internet.

Tuesday was kind of a crazy day at school. The power went out for a bit in the morning, but luckily not too long. However, the students were kind of off the walls all day! They started to forget the rules of school and I was really tired, so it made for a long day.

Wednesday was kind of a little crazy also. The power stayed on for the whole day and night, but the kids were still a little off the walls. I guess that’s what happens when they are off for 6 weeks. It’s like coming back after summer holidays.

I was still pretty tired come Thursday. I slept in way too much over the 6 weeks off so it was very hard waking up early! There were a lot of kids missing in the morning because after BINGO Wednesday night they announced there wasn’t school Thursday. That was a mistake and not everyone knew that. Right before lunch an announcement was made that the water was going to be turned off for the afternoon. So that meant we fed the kids and then sent them home for the rest of the day. We can’t have class if there is no water. The kids were pretty happy to have the afternoon off.

Friday there was no school because there was a death in the community. Since there was no school I was able to watch the Olympic opening ceremonies. This was good because the satellite receiver I have is an older model that can’t record.

On Friday I noticed that it’s started to be lighter longer in the evening. In December I would walk home from school around 4:30and it would be dark out. Friday night I noticed that at 5pmit was still light out – yay summer is coming! That means warmth and no more snow!

I spent most of Saturday watching the Olympics then went to the store to buy some travel snacks. I stopped by the school to check my email since there is still no internet at my house. The power went off and on in the evening. I was trying to watch a movie but it kept going off, so I decided to go to bed early. I needed to wake up early Sunday anyways.

Sunday morning I flew with other school staff to RedLakeand then we took a bus to Winnipeg. We’re going to be here for the week because we’re at a professional development conference. We arrived in the evening so I haven’t done a whole lot tonight. I plan on going to bed soon so I can get up and go to the mall tomorrow. This might be deadly because I haven’t gone to the mall to buy things for myself in forever!

Well I think that’s about it for this week.

Well it’s update time. Once again it’s not a very exciting post since I wasn’t at school all week. Tuesday we handed out more homework packages to the kids. I went to school thinking we’d be doing it about the same time as the previous week, but I ended up sitting around for an hour before everyone else started to trickle in. Reserve time is pretty similar to Africatime so I should be used to it by now. But being on time for things is just too ingrained in me I guess!

When we handed out the new packages we collected the previous week’s packages – well at least we tried to. Majority of the students hadn’t really done any of the work.

The water was off for most of the week. I guess there was a leak somewhere so they were only turning the water on for a couple hours at a time throughout the day. My internet wasn’t working for most of the week so I was never able to get onto the reserve group to find out the times and I always missed it! The water would be working one minute and the next minute I tried to go do something it would be off! It was a little annoying, but it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience.

The power was good at the beginning of the week. We’re still not running on the full system since the main generator is still broken. Wednesday late afternoon it went off for a few minutes a couple times. That was the first time all week so I think that was pretty good.

Thursday was an extremely boring day. I literally sat on my couch all day and watched way too much TV. Times like these it’s nice that we have the movie channels, but at the same time they do drain away your day.

Friday the cell phones started to work again. They’ve been down for maybe about 3 weeks. So since my internet wasn’t working it was nice to at least be able to text again!

Saturday was the same as Thursday – a boring day of watching TV. Sunday the power went off at noonand was off for about an hour. I was nervous that it was off for so long being it Sunday. But it came back on and was good until the early evening when it kept going on and off. I was so worried that they’d cancel school because of it, but luckily they didn’t. I probably would have screamed. I’m pretty used to the power outages, but on Sunday it kept going out right at the end of the movies that I was watching! So all afternoon/evening I never got to see the ends of various movies – that was annoying!

Monday was back to school (finally)! The day went pretty good considering I was so exhausted from not being able to sleep the night before. The kids were pretty good and remembered how to behave in class. I was nervous it would be like September all over again because they had been off for 6 weeks!

In the afternoon a new student showed up in class. Honestly, I’m not too happy about that. I’m up to 16 kids now, which is small for a public school class, but when majority of your class needs one-to-one assistance the more kids there are the harder it is to help each student.

The power went off only once during the school day which was good, but it was off for a while. The power went off again around 6pmwhen I was just about to start making dinner. So I’m sitting here in the dark writing this since there isn’t anything else to do.

For most of the week the reason I didn’t have internet was because it wasn’t working on my side of the reserve. When they came to fix the cell phone they did a band-aid fix on the internet. It worked for a couple hours and then stopped again. We thought that the band-aid fix hadn’t worked, but then we soon realized we were the only ones without internet. So we tested the modem today and figured out that it was going a little wonky so we have a new one now. Hopefully the internet will work properly now and we won’t have anymore issues. That’s the main problem with all the power outages – it ruins electronics.

Well I think that’s about it for this week. I hope the power comes on soon because I’m getting very hungry! When this is posted that means the power finally came back on.

“Everything you can imagine is real.” ― Pablo Picasso

It’s time for another update. I thought that it was going to be a normal update about school, but it’s not going to be. Saturday and Sunday the power went off for a couple times, but it was only for a short period of time. There also wasn’t water for most of Sunday. I went to the school Sunday afternoon to lesson plan and prepare for Monday back in the classroom.

Monday was a pretty good day at school. After 4 weeks off of school I was a little surprised at how well the day went. The kids remember the school rules and we got a full day of work done. The power went off a few times in the morning, but it didn’t seem to faze anyone. I was really happy to be back in the classroom after 2 extra weeks off.

At the end of the day we were called in for a quick staff meeting. I had no idea what the meeting was going to be about. They told us that due to the power still being inconsistent the band had ordered an emergency closure of the school for 2 weeks. The power outages over the last 4 weeks had already caused a lot of damage to the pipes and heating system. The band didn’t want to take the chance of anything else breaking because it would cost so much to fix. I was completely shocked and a little disappointed, but I understand the reasoning.

I spent Monday night making worksheets to send home for the kids. Tuesday we were all at the school photocopying and stapling like crazy to put together packages of work. It took all day and I felt so tired afterwards!

Wednesday morning we all piled on the bus and delivered the packages door to door for the students. We just sent out work for that week and on Monday we’ll send out more work. Then in the afternoon I did some more lesson planning. When we finally get back to school (6 weeks later) we’ll have a lot of work to catch up on!

Thursday, Friday and Saturday I’ve spent the day lesson planning and watching TV. I was so bored by Friday morning! Another week is going to be so boring! My internet is also barely working and I’m not sure why. It’s annoying not having internet when there isn’t a whole lot else to do! The water has been off quite a bit also, but Saturday I finally managed to do some laundry and clean my house.

Sunday is shaping up to be the same – TV all day. I have a window of internet right now so I’m taking advantage of that!
