“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty normal days at school. Nothing out of the ordinary happened and it looked like it was going to be a regular week.

There was a death and when the body returns to the community family and friends go to the airport. So Thursday was a half day so that that could happen. In the morning I only had 5 kids show up. I think I had the most students come. But 5 out of 14 aren’t enough to do much work, so instead I let them watch a movie and then play on the ipads. It was a very boring morning, but it gave me the opportunity to clean up my desk area and rearrange things.

Not many students came to school on Friday either, except for mine. The other classes only had a couple kids come, but I had majority of mine. So we did work in the morning and then the afternoon was free activities.

In the evening Monika and I went to the church. Our Native Language teacher told us her and some of the other elders were going to be singing while preparations were made for the funeral. We felt that it would be good for us to go and pay our respects.

Saturday we all went to the funeral. The Education board wanted us to go because he was a former student at the school. He was also quite young so most of the community was attending.

Sunday was a very boring day. I did nothing at all. The internet was down all weekend so I wasn’t even able to work on my course! In the afternoon a quilt was dropped off for me. Quilts were made for every household on the rez for the 10th memorial of someone who passed away. It’s a very nice quilt and it’s nice that they also made one for each of the teachers even though we didn’t know the person. The reason they made blankets is because the person died from hypothermia so the blanket is symbolic of keeping others warm.

Monday the 28th was a pretty good day at school. There was no water again in the morning, but the students were good so it was a smooth morning. It was Monika’s birthday Monday so after school I was in charge of distracting her so that a cake and dinner could be made.

I, Monika, Adrian, Brandon, and Destiny all got together and had a nice dinner for her birthday. After that we got ourselves ready to go duck hunting. I was already around 8pmso by the time we got ready and down to the river we didn’t have much day light left. We found spots along the shore and settled in to wait. We were out there for about an hour and we didn’t see anything, so we didn’t do much hunting. Instead it was a nice relaxing evening sitting by the shore. After that we went back to have some cake!

Tuesday was a long day at school. I went to bed late because of the duck hunting and cake so I was really tired all day. Wednesday and Thursday were also pretty regular days and I was still tired. Thursday it was a little nicer outside and as the beginning of May my class and Monika’s class went outside for a nature scavenger hunt. Our classes are Book Buddies so we also do other activities together. Surprisingly the scavenger hunt didn’t go over that well! We thought that the kids would be more into it than they were.

Friday seemed like a long day. It was only our second 5 day work week since December so I’m not used to working a full week! Friday night Monika and I painted our nails. We tend to paint them quite frequently because there isn’t much else to do. I do her nails and she does mine. It’s nice having some else do my nails for a change rather than me always doing them.

Saturday I spent most of the day working on my course. I was going to wash my floors, but that never happened because there wasn’t any water for most of the day. Around 11pmthe power went out so I decided to go to bed. They kept trying to turn it on over and over again and every time they did my furnace would make horrible noises. So I turned off all my breakers and figured I’d just turn everything on in the morning.

Sunday morning I woke up and turned my breakers on but the power still wasn’t back on. We were asked to turn all the breakers off in the houses so that they could get the power going. The main generator broke and the small one wasn’t able to hold all the power being used.

Monika and I went over the Susan’s to get warm and use her stove so that we could make lunch. It’s not -40 degree weather anymore, but it is still cold at night so the temperature in the house can get chilly.

Monika and I decided to be adventurous and we made bannock burgers. We made bannock – which consists of flour, baking powder, lard, and water – and then wrapped it around hamburgers before deep frying it. They turned out a little too flaky, but weren’t bad. They were very filling though so we could barely eat even one each!

The power came back on in the afternoon, but everyone has to conserve power so that it stays on. The school is all turned off right now because it draws so much power and it’s going to be closed tomorrow so that they can hopefully try to get the generators fixed.

Well that’s about all of an update for now.

  • That was so nice of the community to give you a quilt as well, it's really nice! I like how much of a close community you live in, they seem supportive of each other during hard times, like funerals.

Poor little duckies! Would you have eaten one if you caught it?

Can we have nail painting dates when you come home this summer please?? I suck at painting my own nails!!

Will the power be more consistent as the weather warms up? Or does it have nothing to do with the weather? I don't remember it being so inconsistent in the fall when you first went up.

School is almost done for the year, excited to see you soon!!!

  • Lol if we had caught some ducks I probably would have had some!

Yes we can paint nails! We'll have to have a girls night and do them!

It's kind of weather related. Because it's so cold people use more power to heat their house and then the generator gets pushed over it's limit and then breaks.
